Nursery Grade Information
Nursery Grade is held from 8.00am each Saturday, rain or shine, in the Gym "Sawdust Pit" at North Park (Petone Club). Players learn basic rugby skills (running, passing and ball handling etc) as well as playing mini 'ripper' games each week. Rugby jerseys, belts and rippers are provided each week, so just turn up with sneakers and comfortable playing attire.

Small Blacks and Rugby Laws Updates – 2014
Changes to Small Blacks Development Model (U13 and below)
Half a game (player substitution rule)
All players must get half at least half a game. At halftime, any reserves that are present, must take the field before the second half starts. This means no rolling subs allowed and also applies to representative games at this level.
Off-side for halfbacks
At Under 13 and below, the law preventing the halfbacks from advancing past the tunnel while the ball is still in the scrum is retained.
Under 8 transition to tackle
A mandatory number of ‘tackle box’ sessions (two) must be carried out for all U8 coaches before the season kicks off . If carried out correctly the season can start straight into tackle with participants not having to play Rippa Rugby.
Players can begin fending at Under 9 grade.
Numbers on the field
Numbers on the field are maximum: 7 for Under 7, and 10 for Under 10. Games must proceed with equal team numbers. If a team doesn’t have enough players to start a game, they lose the game, but a game should then be played with equal numbers. Balance player numbers and ability where possible.
Coaches on the field
Coaches of Under 8 and below are allowed on the field behind their team during the game as coaches can easily referee and assist for the whole game by running behind their team.
If you have any queries regarding Junior or Nursery Grade rugby please feel free to drop us an email.
