The weatherman obviously thought the PETONEMAN course was not challenging enough already and threw in a Northerly wind that reached up to 94km/h at times.
The weather was an obvious deterrent for some but over one hundred competitors competed in both PETONEMAN and PETONEKID events in what is being hailed as a successful start to the 125th season of the Petone Rugby Club.
Even though the wind made the final leg a nightmare for a lot of competitors, overall winner Matus Jurecka did the run, bike, run, bike course in an incredible time of 1 hour 40mins, three minutes clear of second placed Robin Cameron-Jones.
First Petone Rugby Club member home and winner of the PETONEMAN Cup was Steve ‘Runty’ Robertson, those that know Steve know what a wonderful story this is.
In the women’s section Anja Van’t Geeloof scorched around the course in an amazing time of 1 hour fifty-eight minutes, eight minutes clear of Sian Bliss and young up and coming athlete Georgia Bartosh.
College students Johnny McMillan and Sam Pietras won the team race by less than a minute from the Jeremy Drummond and Max Brooking combination.
The first ever PETONEMAN Walk saw a field spanning the ages with Club Patron and Octogenarian Roy Hewson going head to head with twelve year old Fraser McMillan, overall youth won out with the youngster taking line honours. The feed back on the walk was such that this will now be a permanent part of PETONEMAN.
PETONEKID was hotly contested as all contestants paid no respect to the wind that roared down their North Park course unrelentingly for most of the afternoon.
Olivia McCormack was too strong for the boy’s taking out the Under 11 title while Max Quin-Tapara showed he’s every bit the athlete his father Glen was or some might say still is,by winning the U13 division from Alex Bird.
Club Captain Glen posted a very respectable two hours thirty eight minutes at his first solo PETONEMAN attempt.
The Petone Rugby Club and the PETONEMAN organising committee wish to thank everyone involved from the athletes young and old, marshals and to all the supporters who came down to cheer their favourites around the course in the difficult conditions.
