Randwick Meats Petone winger Fautua Otto played a starring role in Manu Samoa’s run through to the final of the Dubai sevens over the weekend.
The recent success of the Manu Samoa Sevens Team in making the Cup Final of the first leg of the IRB Sevens World Series in Dubai has made their country proud.
The tournament which kicked off on the 4th and 5th of December is also the first major tournament for the new Head Coach, Stephen Betham.
The team defeated England 28-19 in the semi-final, having seen off Australia 28-27 in a thrilling quarter-final.
The end of the first half of the cup final saw New Zealand on path for a clear straight win with a 10-0 lead with tries from Tomasi Cama and skipper Dj Forbes.
But a great come back by the boys in blue in blue gave the team a 14-10 lead after two converted tries from Reupena Levasa and Mikaele Pesamino early in the second-half.
New Zealand however, responded again with tries by Kurt Baker and from Tomasi Cama to take the honours in winning the Cup with a final score of 24-12.
Despite New Zealand taking the Cup, the Manu Samoa Sevens Team has made Samoans locally and abroad very proud!
The team are now in South Afirca preparing for the final tournament of the first leg in George on the 11 -12th of December where they will again face the winners of the Dubai Cup – New Zealand in pool games along with Wales and USA.
Manu Samoa is currently ranked 2nd in the 2009/2010 IRB World Sevens Series behind New Zealand with England and Fiji in third place equal.
